A system where you could save scum your way through Returnal would destroy so much of the satisfaction of real progression imo, but it should also safeguard you against power outages and allow you to play other games as you like. It’s not something I used extensively (and can be a bit of a crutch), but I feel for the people that are just now playing and didn’t get to take advantage of it compared to those that abused the shit out of it and their future runs will be so much easier due to all the unlocks they were able to achieve because of it.ĭead Cells had a vastly simple method of saving that could work for this - you would have to pause and select quit, and then when you return and hit continue, it will permanently delete that save file so you can’t abuse it. Resting back to back makes less sense narratively, but for the purposes of ensuring newer and more inexperienced players don’t get frustrated and put the game down, or for those that want to skip to later biomes without farming the first for artifacts/parasites/consumables/integrity upgrades, giving them a way to start with full health when they get there doesn’t seem completely unintentional. Narratively, I don’t see a problem with Selene going out and fighting monsters and then returning to the ship to rest, then going back out and doing it some more and resting again. Hit the ship when you’re on the verge of dying and heal up, then go collect all the green items (which all work as resin at full health) to upgrade the size of your suit integrity (health bar). I know a lot of people will pick up every green item on the ground while full health, and then once they get hit, leave all others there to return to. So the game prepares you for the hard road ahead with better weapons but not by giving you an even slightly extended life bar to help survive the inevitable hits. For example, if you skip through the gateway to biome 2 and skip the biome 1 boss, the first weapon you pick up will adjust your weapon proficiency to 5+ but to the best of my knowledge, there’s nothing that does this for your health. But it was always my impression that they intentionally put the ship bed in biome 1 and allowed you to return to it, for people that were intentionally prepping themselves for a full run of the game or needed the help to beat the first boss/biome at least. I’m not aware of how much you get healed now, as I’ve heard some people say one single full heal and others say approximately 10%. And they are allowing you to heal with it post-patch too, it’s just the amount that’s changed.
